Conte Pledges Italy's Commitment to UNIFIL Mission in Lebanon Despite Security Risks
Former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Five Star Movement (M5S), has reaffirmed Italy's commitment to maintaining its UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, despite growing concerns about escalating attacks on international forces.
Speaking publicly in Sassari on March 16, Conte emphasized that Italy must honor its responsibilities to UNIFIL until the mission's conclusion at year's end. "It brings luster to our prestige, to us as a nation and within the international community," he stated, reflecting on his previous visits to the mission during his tenure as Prime Minister.
Balancing Commitment and Safety
Conte acknowledged the serious security challenges facing Italian troops deployed along the Lebanese-Israeli border. "Obviously we are deeply concerned about these attacks, because it is clear we are at risk," he said. "Maximum prudence is required, but let us try to honor the United Nations mission to the very end, hoping these attacks cease and our soldiers are not left exposed to danger in a highly compromised military zone."
His remarks capture the delicate position Italy faces as the second-largest troop contributor to UNIFIL, with approximately 1,000 to 1,100 soldiers currently deployed in the UN mission's most challenging operational sector.
Why This Matters for Italy
Italy's substantial military presence in Lebanon reflects decades of commitment to Mediterranean stability and positions Rome as a credible participant in international security architecture. The deployment carries significant diplomatic weight beyond its military function, representing Italy's willingness to contribute to global peacekeeping efforts despite the inherent risks.
Conte's public assurances come as the security environment in the region has deteriorated, with multiple reports of attacks on UN peacekeeping patrols. The former Prime Minister's emphasis on "maximum prudence" suggests Italian officials are acutely aware of the dangers facing deployed personnel, even as he insists the mission must continue.
