Sky becomes full mobile operator in Italy with new MVNO launch
Sky Italia has completed its transformation into a full mobile virtual network operator, taking direct control of its mobile offerings from 23 September 2026. The move ends the company's previous role as a reseller and marks a significant step in its expansion strategy for Italian households.
The Sky Italia chief executive Andrea Duilio said in a statement that the launch marks an important step in the company's growth strategy. As an MVNO operator, he explained, Sky can now offer solutions tailored to customer needs and favourable conditions for long-term clients.
What changes for customers
Sky Mobile now operates as an MVNO of type ESP (Enhanced Service Provider), meaning Sky manages its mobile service directly rather than reselling another operator's SIMs. The company has built its own platform for real-time service management.
The network infrastructure remains that of Fastweb + Vodafone, the combined entity formed after Swisscom, Fastweb's parent company, acquired Vodafone Italia on 31 December 2024. That network provides 4G coverage on 99% of Italian territory plus 5G access where available, with speeds reaching up to 2 Gbps.
New customers can choose between two plans, both offering unlimited minutes, 200 SMS, and 5G connectivity:
• Sky Mobile Maxi: 150 GB of data for €7.90 per month
• Sky Mobile Ultra: 250 GB of data for €9.90 per month
Neither plan carries duration constraints, exit fees, or hidden costs.
Advantages for existing Sky subscribers
Customers who already subscribe to Sky TV or Sky Wifi receive enhanced terms. The data allowances increase significantly when mobile is combined with other Sky services:
• Sky Mobile Maxi rises from 150 GB to 250 GB for existing Sky customers
• Sky Mobile Ultra includes unlimited data for existing Sky customers
• Subscribers combining Sky Mobile with TV or Wifi get unlimited gigabytes
Loyalty rewards apply based on subscription length. Customers of at least six years receive six months free with Sky Mobile Ultra. Those with shorter tenure get two months free on the same plan.
The convergence bundle combining Sky TV, Sky Mobile, and Sky Wifi starts at €35.90 per month for the first 18 months.
eSIM availability
Sky Mobile supports eSIM technology for both new and existing customers. The virtual SIM card can be requested online or in shops at the same cost as a physical SIM, generally €10 for activation.
Sky Italia entered the telecommunications market in 2020 with Sky Wifi, using the networks of Open Fiber and Fastweb. It launched mobile service in February 2024 as a reseller under the brand Sky Mobile powered by Fastweb. The shift to full MVNO status gives the company commercial independence while maintaining its network partnership.
Market estimates put Sky Mobile's share at around 1% of Italian mobile subscribers. The company positions itself as a partner for families seeking combined content, fixed-line, and mobile services.
