The Italy-based San Donato Hospital Group has renewed its management contract for Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf Teaching Hospital in central Iraq, extending the group's healthcare operations in the Middle East. The $40.5M annual agreement was finalized with the Iraqi Ministry of Health and the GKSD investment holding.
Key Details:
The facility in Najaf, a city of 1.5 million residents, serves as a major medical hub in central Iraq. San Donato took over operational management of the hospital in 2024 and has since mobilized specialists to restore critical infrastructure and clinical services.
Endorsement from Iraqi Leadership:
Kamel Ghribi, vice president of San Donato Group and president of GKSD, met with Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi in Baghdad to formalize the extension. "Healthcare can and must be an instrument of cooperation, stability, and development among peoples," Ghribi said in a statement. "In recent years we have worked to build quality, training, skills, and trust, contributing concretely to the strengthening of the Iraqi health system."
Broader Middle East Strategy:
The Najaf contract is part of San Donato's expanded presence in the Middle East. The group has partnered with NMC Healthcare, the UAE's largest hospital operator, to deliver dental and medical education programs across the region.
For Italy's healthcare sector, the renewal demonstrates confidence in the viability of long-term healthcare management contracts in markets where international operators can bring specialized expertise and operational standards. The partnership underscores how Italian healthcare firms are expanding their footprint beyond Europe while supporting local health infrastructure development.
