The Italy Ministry for Sport and Youth has officially confirmed the positioning of six international sailing syndicates at the Bagnoli waterfront in Naples, marking a significant step toward hosting the 38th edition of the Louis Vuitton America's Cup in summer 2027. This will be the first time the world's oldest international sporting trophy races in Italian waters.

Six Syndicates Confirmed, One Slot Still Open

Render images released by Sport e Salute, the government's implementing agency for the event, show the footprint each team will occupy along the Bagnoli colmata — the reclaimed industrial peninsula in the Gulf of Naples. The confirmed syndicates are Emirates Team New Zealand (defending champion), Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli (Italy), Alinghi (Switzerland), GB1 (United Kingdom), K-Challenge (France), and the recently admitted American Racing Challenger (United States).

A seventh syndicate is expected to be announced imminently, according to officials. Minister for Sport and Youth Andrea Abodi noted that American participation resolves internal disputes and guarantees "the spectacle of sailing at its highest competitive and technological level, with all its historic components present."

Timeline and First Events

The initial five teams are scheduled to arrive in Bagnoli by June 2026, according to organizers' timelines. Construction areas and utilities for the team bases were contractually required to be available by 1 April 2026, allowing syndicates to begin on-water training ahead of the main event.

The first preliminary regatta of the competition cycle is scheduled for Cagliari, Sardinia, from 21–24 May, offering an early glimpse of the new AC75 hydrofoil designs before the main event in Naples.

What This Means for Residents

For those living in or near Naples, the America's Cup represents both opportunity and change. The Bagnoli redevelopment, stalled for decades, is now progressing as the event nears. The area will host team hangars, technical workshops, media centers, and a fan village during the races, then convert into a public waterfront area once the event concludes.

Minister Gaetano Manfredi, serving as Naples Mayor and Special Commissioner, coordinates the project with Invitalia and Sport e Salute. A legality protocol has been signed to block mafia-linked subcontractors and enforce labor protections.

The Puig Women's America's Cup and Youth America's Cup will also be staged in Naples, broadening participation and aligning with the event's push to modernize beyond the traditional elite, yacht-club demographic.

Planning for the Event

Naples was named European Capital of Sport 2026, a designation intended to leverage momentum from the America's Cup and other events. Organizers have studied precedents from Spain's hosting of the competition in Valencia and Barcelona to inform their planning.

The renders are now public, contracts are signed, and preparations have begun. For residents, the event represents a visible shift for the Bagnoli waterfront area after years of stalled development. The competition will take place in summer 2027, with preliminary events beginning the preceding year.
