Fuel prices fall below key thresholds as more operators join price cap scheme
Petrol dropped below €2.10 per litre for the first time in weeks, as the Italy Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT) confirmed that average self-service prices continue their descent across the national road network. Unleaded petrol averaged €2.084 per litre, down from €2.111 the previous day, while diesel fell to €2.285 per litre from €2.316.
Major fuel retailers roll out price limits
The downward trend stems from decisions by Eni, IP and Q8 to introduce voluntary price caps at the pump. Eni, the state-controlled energy giant, led the move by capping prices at €1.99 per litre for unleaded petrol and €2.19 for diesel at its Enilive-branded stations for an initial 30-day period. The initiative produces an estimated saving of roughly 17 cents per litre compared with market averages — equivalent to about €10–11 on a full tank.
IP, controlled by Azerbaijan's Socar energy company, matched the Eni limits and is extending the mechanism to Esso-branded stations it supplies. Q8 followed on 1 October with a modular approach, adapting its price ceiling to regional market conditions while maintaining the 30-day timeframe.
The Italy Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy noted in a statement that the price gap is widening between stations applying caps and those that have not, pressuring competitors who have yet to announce similar measures.
Tamoil becomes fourth major operator to act
Tamoil Italia, part of the Oilinvest international group, announced it will adopt price mitigation measures at its network of distributors until 31 October 2026. The company, responding to calls from institutions and consumer associations, said its initiatives aim to support citizen mobility while ensuring economic sustainability for its distribution network.
The four operators combined account for over half of Italy's approximately 22,000 fuel stations. Tamoil did not specify the exact reductions it will apply.
Motorway prices also declining
On autostrade, where prices typically run higher, self-service averages stood at €2.122 per litre for petrol and €2.328 for diesel, both down from the previous day. A motorist filling a 50-litre tank on the motorway would now pay approximately €106 for petrol — a modest but measurable reduction.
For Italian drivers, the immediate effect is visible at pumps under the Eni, IP, Q8 and soon Tamoil brands — though prices elsewhere remain substantially higher. The government's daily fuel price observatory updates at 08:30 each morning on the MIMIT website.
