The Italian Carabinieri are hunting for suspects after two young women were caught in crossfire during a midnight gunfight in central Naples on April 30, 2026—an incident that underscores the persistent challenge of armed violence in Italy's third-largest city.

The Incident

Two innocent bystanders, aged 23 and 24, were shot in the legs while walking through the Avvocata district, a densely populated neighborhood in Naples' historic center.

The shooting erupted shortly before midnight on via Francesco Saverio Correra, a street threading through the Avvocata quarter.

No arrests have been made as of Friday, May 1, 2026, with investigators still working to identify the gunmen and determine the circumstances of the gunfight.

Medical Response and Investigation

Emergency medical teams from 118 paramedic services transported both victims to the CTO Hospital trauma unit. Surgeons extracted a bullet from the left thigh of the 24-year-old, who was discharged with a 20-day recovery prognosis. Her companion, the 23-year-old, remained hospitalized under observation as of Friday morning. Neither woman faces life-threatening injuries.

Both victims are Neapolitan residents with no criminal records. They have cooperated with authorities, though neither could identify the shooters.

Forensic specialists from the Carabinieri's Scientific Investigations Section processed the scene overnight, collecting ballistic evidence and canvassing for witnesses. The motive and identities of the shooters remain under investigation, with authorities yet to confirm the circumstances of the initial gunfight.

The Carabinieri Centro company has appealed for witnesses, emphasizing that even minor details—vehicle descriptions, voices, or fleeting observations—can prove decisive.

Related Incident in Apulia

Less than 24 hours before the Naples shooting, a man was fatally shot inside a restaurant in Bisceglie, a coastal town in Bari province. According to preliminary reports from local Carabinieri and Italian State Police units, the incident claimed one life. Investigators have not yet released the victim's name pending family notification and security assessments, nor have they determined the circumstances of the killing.

Significance

The two incidents represent recent examples of gun violence in southern Italy and underscore ongoing law enforcement efforts to address armed crime across the region.
